The e-card reader is a barcode scanner that plugs into the cartridge slot of the Game Boy Advance. It was released in Japan in December 2001, with a North American release following in September 2002, though in far more limited numbers. This example in our collection is the Japanese version. It has an LED scanner that reads paper cards of paper with uniquely encoded data on them using dot code.

The data was for game add-ons and for downloading one player versions of NES classics such as Balloon Fight, Excite Bike and Donkey Kong. New levels and items could be scanned in for Super Mario Advance IV, and if the player could get a Gamecube, a link cable and a Game Boy Advance, then Animal Crossing cards could be used in the in game post office for extra tunes and clothing. There were e-cards for Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire that enabled the player to get extra battle powers and Berries.

Cards were sold in gaming stores and also given away with Energiser batteries.
